Justice for Oluwatoyin Salau.

Justice for Tony McDade.

Floyd Street, night of June 18th:

  1. The sunset was so striking, I hope I have a real photo of it, my phone camera did not do it justice.

What looks like trench fortification in the foreground is a mound of flowers that went in a ring around the Fist. There was a clothesline right behind me where flowers would dry, potted plants in the breeze blocks, and an entire garden forming the secondary base of the Fist. It’s not the best picture, but zoom in! You can still see all the flowers! There’s a greenhouse opposite the People’s Way these days, and when it warms up, gardens outside & behind the coffee shop adjacent the People’s way.

Even the trashcan has a story. Early on there was ALWAYS a party on Floyd street. Live DJs and live musicians. And after, many people didn’t just leave, they helped make sure the Square was left cleaner than when they got there.

LNT on Floyd’s Street!

2. That yellow haze isn’t smog or filter, it’s literally a trick of the light! During and after rain, the sun’s rays filters through the moisture in the lower atmosphere, and it can make the air you stand in look strikingly pink, yellow, or even green in rare cases! Somewhere I might have a picture I took years ago, where the air around me was so yellow I could see the tinge not just of objects or moisture but the yellow tint of the air itself. It really helped articulate to me that we live in the densest part of the atmosphere.

3. Oluwatoyin Ruth “Toyin” Salau was a 19 year old Black Lives Matter activist.

She disappeared on Saturday, June 6, 2020, shortly after tweeting about being sexually assaulted.

Salau was found dead in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday, June 13, 2020.

Described as an “emerging leader” and “prominent voice” in the movement, Oluwatoyin Salau is most remembered for her fight for justice in the name of Tony McDade.

Tony McDade was a 38-year-old Transgender African-American man fatally shot in the Leon Arms apartment complex by an officer of the Tallahassee Police Department on May 27th, 2020.

4. A photo from within the tents on Floyd Square where many activists came to rest after a hard day’s night.
